Responding to a parliamentary question from the DA, the Department of Human Settlements revealed that Kota-Fredericks was due to receive two new cars in November, a BMW for her Pretoria office and a Mercedes in Cape Town.
But she has apparently asked the department not to buy new cars for her and to let her continue using the vehicles that were left by former housing minister Lindiwe Sisulu.
"The deputy minister is currently using a car previously used by the former minister of housing in Pretoria and has indicated that consideration should be given to cancel these orders if agreed upon with the suppliers, as she will prefer to utilise the current vehicles, even though one has done more than the limit of 120 000km," said the department in its reply.
The ministerial handbook stipulates that ministers should get new vehicles when the ones they are using have clocked 120 000km, or are five years old.
Human Settlements Minister and former businessman Tokyo Sexwale has refused government-provided vehicles and uses his own cars for government work.
He has not submitted mileage claims to allow for him to be compensated for use of his own cars.
Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joematt-Pettersson are some of the ministers who got new wheels after they were appointed.
